Draft Strategy

Draft strategy is crucial when going into a draft. If you know before hand where youa re picking, then the work is easier. You can narrow down what your first few picks will look like and aroiund what players will be available. My advice going into any draft especially a draft where you don;t know where you pick until the draft is to stay balanced. In my opinion a real man’s league you don’t know where you pick until draft time. I’ve been in leagues where I know my slot and can almost pick ahead of players ADP with guys I really like and let other guys fall into my lap. It almost makes it easier on the weaker fantasy players when they know where they are slotted days in advance of the draft.

When I say stay balanced in your draft here is what I mean. Your first 5 picks set up your draft strategy. If you select Ceedee Lamb and Puka Nucua with your first 2 picks, then select a TE and QB with your next 2 picks … you’re really handcuffing yourself the rest of the draft. If you do the aforementioned and now you are looking to have to reach at RB postion out of necessity. Nothing is worse than having 3 players early at a RB/WR spot and one falls to you that should have been taken rounds ago and you really can’t pull the trigger because you haven’t drafted any players at the other postion. While it’s always nice to have an elite TE and QB, most weeks these positions are interchangeable, but having a legit RB1 – WR1 aren’t.

I’m not saying you can’t draft WR/WR but if you do make sure you keep your next couple picks are balanced by grabbing a RB you like and only taking a TE or QB if one falls in your lap and you can’t wait because of how the board is looking needy at those positions before it swings back to you in the following round. Make sure you also swing on a few RB’s late with upside in a good offense. If you go RB/RB make sure you keep your next couple picks are balanced by grabbing a WR you like and only taking a TE or QB if one falls in your lap. Fantasy relevant wide receivers seem to be more available late in drafts compared to running backs. So going RB/RB can be more viable now with more teams producing passing stats for multiple receivers. I used to be a guy for years that would try and get WR1/WR1 with my first 2 picks before that became a trend in recent years. With the increase in passing around the league I find there are WR’s available all through the draft, where running backs are few and far between.

In conclusion in 2024 I am taking the approach of making sure I have a top RB with one of my first 2 picks and the best available at my other pick and go from there. I feel the no RB approach is dying and I want to be ahead of that trend. I have yet to mock draft a team where I took WR/WR and liked the rest of my roster. On the other hand I’ve drafted several teams where I went RB/RB and as long as I waited on a TE really liked my team.
